The Sochi Winter Olympic 100 Day Countdown has Begun!

Posted by Kevin on 11/8/2013 to Events

As the premier ski shop in NH, we at Ken Jones Ski Mart have to keep our ear to the proverbial snow covered grindstone. The magnitude of our passion for winter sports surprises even us; especially when something like the Winter Olympics is concerned. And, starting on October 29, 2013, the official 100 day countdown to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia began. And we’re those individuals who walk around in a shared state of enthralled excitement for any huge winter sporting events. We’re the ones with our eyes glazed over and glued to the television set, actually counting down the days to the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Representing USA

As snowboard enthusiasts, as well as Americans, the idea of some of our favorite athletes representing the United States in front of an international audience rightly gives us goose bumps. To think that we’ll be seeing NH natives like Scotty Lago and Bode Miller, along with other American favorites like Shaun White, tearing up a brand new snow park leaves our jaws slackened and spines chilled.

For those unfamiliar with the way snowboarding works in the Olympic Games, here’s the basis of what you need to know. There are four women’s events and four men’s events. For each, there’s the half-pipe competition, the parallel giant slalom, the boarder-cross, and the newly added “slopestyle,” competition. Sochi’s newly designed snow park called, “Rosa Khutor,” is an 8,000 seat facility built with a half pipe and special courses for the parallel giant slalom, the boarder-cross, and the slopestyle events.

The slopestyle completion is new to the Olympic Games this year and is a winter sporting event where the goal is to perform the most difficult tricks while getting the highest amplitude off of jumps, with an emphasis on performing different types of trick instead of doing one great trick repeatedly. The new slopestyle track is one of the most unique in Olympic history. Sochi spared no expense on the slopestyle track, as shown below.

In fact, in an article published by rt.com, the Sochi Olympic Games, “looked set to become the most expensive in history, costing an estimated $50 billion.” And the same article reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin, “met with the Head of the Olympic Committee on Monday, (Oct. 28, 2013), and called on organizers for a ‘final push,’ assuring that the majority of sites were ready.”

The 2014 Winter Olympics have all of us at Ken Jones Ski Mart and Snowboard Jones feverishly counting down the days…98…97…96… Join us in cheering on our fellow American snow addicts as they strive for the gold medal once again.
